Jetski Licence

$275

If you want to ride a jetski in Queensland, you need a Personal Watercraft Licence (PWCL) — and at Caloundra Boat and Jetski Training, you can walk away with yours on the same day you train.

Do You Need a Licence to Ride a Jetski in Queensland?

Yes. In Queensland, it is a legal requirement to hold both a Recreational Marine Driver Licence (RMDL) and a Personal Watercraft Licence (PWCL) before you can operate any jetski or personal watercraft on Queensland waterways.

That is, you need a boat licence to get the jetski licence, but we can do them both in the one day- usually in about 5-6 hours of practical training.

This applies to all PWCs with a fully enclosed hull designed to be ridden standing, crouching, kneeling, or sitting astride. The good news? Once you have your Queensland marine licence, you never have to renew it — it is valid for life.

What Is a Personal Watercraft (PWC)?

A personal watercraft is defined as a powered vessel that:

  • Has a fully enclosed hull that does not take on water if capsized

  • Is designed to be operated by a person standing, crouching, kneeling, or sitting astride it

The most common jetskis in QLD are the SeaDoo, Yamaha and Kawasaki.

Can I Get My Boat Licence and PWC Licence Together?

Yes — and about 80% of our students do exactly that.

Our combined Boat + Jetski Licence course lets you earn both your Recreational Marine Driver Licence (RMDL) and your Personal Watercraft Licence (PWCL) in one day. It's our most popular course and the most efficient way to get fully licensed on the water.

What Does the PWC Licence Course Cover?

Our same-day PWC licence course includes:

  • Theory component (done online)— marine rules and regulations, navigation, safety obligations, waterway rules for PWC.

  • Practical on-water assessment — you'll demonstrate skills including controlled turns, man overboard drills, mooring approaches, and safe operation at speed.

  • PWC Theory Test — covering jetski-specific rules including speed restrictions, distance rules, wave jumping zones, and passenger rules

All practical training is completed on the same day at our Caloundra location on the Sunshine Coast.

PWC Licence Requirements in Queensland

To obtain your Personal Watercraft Licence in Queensland, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age (can do the course at 15.5 years),

  • Complete an approved BoatSafe training and assessment program with an accredited provider.

  • Pass both the Theory test (called a PWC Common Assessment Tool)

  • Complete a practical on-water assessment

At Caloundra Boat and Jetski Training, we are an approved BoatSafe training provider. We cover all of it in a single day; except the online training with is done at home.

How Long Does the Course Take?

Our same-day PWC licence course runs for a half day. Minimum training and practical assessment times are required under Queensland law and we usually get done between 5-6 hours in total, which includes the time for theory assessment.

Most of our students arrive without prior PWC experience — we will take you through everything you need to know from scratch.

What Happens After I Complete the Course?

After completing your BoatSafe course and passing all assessments:

  1. You'll receive a printed Statement of Competency (SoC) confirming your RMDL and/or PWCL, and you must take this into TMR.

  2. If you have a valid Queensland driver licence, a new licence card will be mailed to you with your marine licence type printed on the back

  3. Your licence will also appear in the Queensland Digital Licence app if you have it installed

  4. Your QLD licence is valid for life — no renewals required
