A No BS guide to finally getting your boat and jet ski licence done.
If you've been putting off your boat licence because you "can't find the time," here's the good news: in Queensland you no longer have to block out a whole weekend in a classroom. The way the system is set up now, you can knock over the theory at home in a couple of hours, then book a single half-day on the water whenever it suits you — weekday, weekend, school holidays, whatever fits.
So where do you actually find that flexibility? Let's break it down.
The short answer
Flexible boat licence training in Queensland almost always works the same way: self-paced online theory you complete at home, paired with a bookable, half-day practical session on the water. Plenty of Queensland Government–approved (Boatsafe) providers run practical sessions across South East Queensland and the regions, many of them several days a week. In QLD, the training and assessment for the boat and jetski licence will the standardised across all providers, but there is hidden value parked with each —the trick is finding that value.
Here’s what we’ve been told we do well:
1. Operating 5-6 days a week, including weekdays and weekends.
2. Private Marina Training and Facility. This helps our students reduce the nerves as we’re not in the direct public eye at the boat ramps for most of the training.
3. Calm waterways and training area. Caloundra, and the Pumicestone Passage provide protection from almost every wind strength and direction as there is always somewhere we can practice without getting bashed around in strong winds.
4. Highest Rated Trainers in QLD. The iLicence brand has seen us train over 12,000 students across our QLD locations and we’re currently the leading reviewed boat and jetski trainers in Queensland with over 1,100 5x Star Google Reviews.
5. Free Boating and Safety Skipper Sheets. To make sure the knowledge learned on the day isn’t lost in the frazzle of the day, we give all of our students a skipper safety sheet with all of the key takeaways to keep, so they’re not having to remember all of the key elements.
6. Zero retest fees, ever. We have a very strong pass rate sitting at about 98%. If it so happens on the day that we think you need some more time, no stress, we’ll book you back in for another time and it won’t cost you a thing.
7. FREE online tutorials and lessons. We’re one of only a handful operators that post free online training how to’s and videos on our YouTube Channel here.
8. We have the resources and team to accommodate big groups, enabling to train up to 10 students in a day, available on any date that suits you from our booking calendar, Monday to Sunday.
What "flexible scheduling" actually means
A few years back, getting your licence meant a full day sat in a classroom on a date someone else picked. These days the better providers split it into two pieces you control:
The theory is done online, in your own time. Log in and out as you please, do it over a week of lunch breaks or smash it out in one evening — your call.
The practical is a half-day on the water, and this is where scheduling matters. The flexible operators let you choose from sessions running most days of the week, rather than offering one or two fixed dates a month.
That's the difference between "flexible" on paper and flexible in practice. A provider can run online theory and still only offer a practical once a fortnight. Always check the actual calendar before you assume.
How the Queensland boat licence process works (and why it's built for flexibility)
For a recreational marine driver licence (the boat licence) and a personal watercraft licence (the jet ski licence), the path is the same right across the state:
Complete the Boatsafe online theory at your own pace. It generates a certificate once you've passed.
Book and attend your practical training and assessment — usually a half-day on the water. This needs to be done within three months of finishing your theory.
Receive your Statement of Competency from your provider. Important bit: this is not your licence.
Take it to a Transport and Main Roads (TMR) customer service centre to have the licence added to your record. There's a separate Queensland Government licence fee for this (around $128, indexed each July — check the TMR site for the current figure), and you've got six months to do it.
Because steps 1 and 2 are decoupled, you control the timeline. That's the flexibility — the system is designed for it.
What to look for in a flexible provider
Not all "flexible" is created equal. Before you book anywhere, here's what we'd tell a mate to check:
How often do practical sessions actually run? Look for weekday and weekend options, ideally seven days a week. One date a fortnight isn't flexible.
Is the theory genuinely self-paced? You should be able to log in and out whenever, not sit a timed online session.
Where do they train? Calm, protected water makes a huge difference, especially if it's your first time docking or doing slow-speed drills. Open, choppy water on a windy day is a rough place to learn.
What happens if you don't pass first go? Some operators offer unlimited practice and free re-tests, but not all.
Combo options. If you want both tickets, a combined boat-and-jet-ski package is cheaper and done in the same session.
Reviews. Hundreds of recent, genuine five-star reviews tell you more than any marketing line.
Flexible boat and jet ski training on the Sunshine Coast
If you're anywhere from Pelican Waters up to Noosa — or happy to make the easy run up from Glass House Mountains — this is our patch, so here's how we keep it flexible at iLicence Caloundra:
Theory at home, at your own pace. Start whenever, finish whenever.
Practical sessions Monday to Sunday. Weekday or weekend, you pick the date from our calendar — no waiting weeks for a spot.
One private marina, calm water. We train out of Pelican Waters Marina and the protected Pumicestone Passage — the only private marina training in Caloundra. It means you learn docking, planing and slow drills out of the wind, not battling it.
Unlimited practice and a relaxed pace. We'll take a coffee break halfway through and knock over the theory test in a stress-free setting. Students tell us it feels more like a day out than a test day.
Three licences, three prices: Boat Licence $299 (4–5 hours), Jet Ski Only $315 (if you already hold a boat licence), or the Boat & Jet Ski combo $499 (5–6 hours) — the best value if you want both. Afterpay's available too.
Over 1,100 five-star Google reviews across our Queensland locations.
As a Queensland Government–approved Boatsafe, RMDL (boat) and PWC (jet ski) trainer, so the licence you walk away with is the real deal, and because you've done it in QLD, you've the strongest equivalent now in any of the states of Australia.
What if I'm not on the Sunshine Coast?
Flexible providers run right across Queensland — through Brisbane and the wider South East, down to the Gold Coast, and up into regional spots like Airlie Beach and the north. The same two-part structure (online theory plus a bookable practical) applies wherever you are, so use the checklist above to weigh up your local options. And if you're within striking distance of Caloundra, we'd love to get you sorted — plenty of our students happily make the trip up for the private marina and the calmer water.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a boat licence in Queensland? The online theory takes most people 3-4 hours at their own pace, and the practical is a half-day on the water. Many people complete the whole thing in a single day once their theory is done.
Can I do the theory online and the practical separately? Yes — that's exactly how flexible scheduling works. You complete the Boatsafe approved theory online at home, then book your practical for any available date. Just note the practical needs to be done within three months of finishing the theory.
Do practical sessions run on weekends? With the right provider, yes. We run sessions seven days a week — weekday and weekend. Always check a provider's actual booking calendar to confirm.
Is the certificate the same as my licence? No. You receive a Statement of Competency, which you then take to a TMR customer service centre to have your marine licence issued. You've got six months to do this, and a separate Queensland Government fee applies.
Can I get my boat and jet ski licence on the same day? Yes. A combined boat-and-jet-ski course covers both in the one session and works out cheaper than doing them separately.
How much does it cost? Course prices vary by provider. At iLicence Caloundra it's $299 for the boat licence, $315 for jet ski only, or $499 for the combo — plus the separate TMR licence fee (around $128) paid to the Queensland Government.
Getting licensed shouldn't mean rearranging your whole life. Pick your date, do the theory when it suits you, and come spend a fun half-day on the water with us. Got a question? Just give us a bell on 0450 700 202 or book your spot online — we're 100% here for you.
